SOF Culinary Tip of the Week: Add Flavor with Beer

With the warm weather quickly approaching (finally!), we’re ready to go grills out. Prepare yourself for some seriously delightful meat sweats this Spring/Summer by adding flavor to your favorite meats with a beer-based marinade!

Any of your favorite beers can make a great marinade, but in general, darker beers like stouts and porters complement more robust meats like steak, while lighter beers such as lagers and pilsners work well with seafood and poultry. The darker the beer, the more flavor you’ll add. To make a simple beer marinade, simply incorporate beer, garlic, black pepper, and your favorite spices. While you’re at it, make twice the amount of marinade, and reserve the other half to baste your meat while cooking (or to “mop” it, if you’re grilling).

Marinate for 4-8 hours – always in the refrigerator – and dispose of the marinade after it’s been used. Bonus fact: marinating your meat in beer for 4 hours or more can actually make it much healthier to grill! Seriously. Google it.
